Many landlords 'still have no EPC'
Despite it being a legal requirement, almost half of all landlords have not obtained energy performance certificates (EPCs) for their property, a survey has found.

During the fourth quarter, 45.6 per cent had not obtained an EPC for any of their properties, according to a poll by Paragon Mortgages.

Since October 2008 it has been a legal requirement for property owners to have an EPC available to prospective tenants when they put it up for rent.

Paragon Mortgages says that the research shows that landlords will obtain the necessary EPCs when a new tenant is required and this is highlighted by the improving figures.

During the third quarter, 81.3 per cent of landlords surveyed revealed that they had not got round to obtaining an EPC for any of their dwellings.

Furthermore, during the third quarter only 5.2 per cent of landlords had EPCs for their entire portfolio and this figure increased to 12 per cent in the fourth quarter.

"Whilst this shows an improvement in compliance, it underlines the need for a sustained communication campaign by government," Paragon Mortgage said.
