23/10/2008 Overseas students unaware of deposit protection schemes |
|
A growing number of overseas students could be putting their money at risk when they move into rented accommodation.
That is according to mydeposits.co.uk, which is worried that these students are unaware that the money they put down to secure rented property should go into a deposit protection scheme.
As such, the organisation wants universities and colleges to make a concerted effort to inform students about the importance of the schemes and how students can check whether their landlords are placing their deposits in them.
The average student rent stands at over £245 per month and mydeposits.co.uk chairman, David Salusbury, has asserted that it is very important for all students to ensure that their deposits are well protected.
He said: "It is important [that overseas students] understand some of the laws associated with their rented accommodation, and universities and colleges have an important role to play in this."
Mydeposits.co.uk is a government-approved tenancy deposit protection scheme which protects approximately 300,000 deposits. |
