24/02/2009 Put £6bn into social housing, Brown told |
|
The newly-created 2020 Group has urged the government to pump over £6 billion into social housing to tackle shortages.
Chaired by Gordon Brown's former housing advisor Kate Barker, 2020 is an alliance of groups including Shelter, the Trades Union Congress and the Local Government Association.
According to reports, Ms Barker is urging the prime minister to build the country out of recession, which will create additional affordable homes and jobs.
She says that support for housing sustains economic activity and reduces the risk of a sizeable loss of capacity in the housing sector and its related industries.
"There is real concern that the present fall in homebuilding is sowing the seeds of the next boom. Social housing waiting lists are rising. This package meets a real and urgent need," Ms Barker added.
A spokesperson for the Union of Construction, Allied Trades and Technicians says that the prime minister should be "forcing" private housebuilders to finish their projects to use them as social housing, which will take pressure off the housing industry and restart the housebuilding sector.
