The Association of Residential Lettings Agents (Arla) says that the point and time that a tenant becomes aware of repossession is a major issue.
New government proposals to support tenants come into effect on April 6th and will aim to help tenants who could be made homeless by their landlord's mortgage woes.
Ian Potter, operations manager at Arla, says that the increased notice at the point of possession proceedings would give tenants up to seven weeks notice, but not all proceedings lead to repossession.
He suggests that it would be more beneficial if the notice period was "after the repossession order had been granted".
However, he added that: "They would have to change the law, they need primary legislation. It is not something they can do quickly."
According to the Council of Mortgage Lenders, there were 5,000 less repossessions than forecast last year and its 75,000 repossessions prediction for 2009 remains unchanged. |
