23/12/2008 2008: The year of 'lost data' |
|
The 12 months spanning 2008 have been termed the year of lost data by Computing.co.uk.
In its month-by-month review of data losses, the website revealed that the year did not get off to a great start with the Ministry of Defence misplacing a laptop containing the details of 600,000 people.
It was revealed that March was the only month where no major data losses were exposed.
July saw the report into HM Revenue and Customs' loss of 25 million child benefit records highlight "serious institutional deficiencies", while Home Office contractor PA Consulting lost the details of 84,000 prisoners during the process of moving a memory stick between PCs in August.
A KPMG report released last month suggests that 280 million people worldwide have been affected by data violations.
The Ponemon Institute has blamed the loss or theft of private and confidential on a lack of investment, awareness and procedure.
