27/08/2008 Bank details on computer sold via eBay |
|
An investigation has been launched into how a computer that contained bank details of Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) customers was sold on eBay.
The computer in question was originally owned by Graphic Data, a company that holds financial information for other organisations.
Commenting on the incident, an RBS spokeswoman said: "Graphic Data has confirmed to us that one of their machines appears to have been inappropriately sold on via a third party."
Jenny Thomas, a spokeswoman for eBay, has said to itv.com that the company is expecting Andrew Chapman, the IT manager who bought the computer from the internet auction site, to hand it back as soon as possible.
Ms Thomas admitted that the details on the hard drive of the PC should not have been available to the general public and she said that eBay would work with Graphic Data to find out how the information came to be for sale on the site.
Encryption specialist Credant Technologies has stated that the sale of the computer containing customers' bank details was avoidable. |
