17/09/2008 BERR says technology will conform to data protection laws |
|
The government has responded to concerns from the European Commission that technology designed to track website user's visits may be breaching laws on communications interception. BT's Phorm ad-serving technology tracks visits to websites and then builds a profile of an anonymised user. Concern had been raised over whether BT customers had given their consent to trials of the technology. Responding to a letter by the European Commission questioning the legality of trials of the technology, the Department of Business, Enterprise, and Regulatory Reform (BERR) said that it would ensure it conformed to UK privacy and data protection laws. In a statement, BERR said: "The UK authorities are working to ensure that, if [Phorm] is introduced into the market for internet-based advertising services, this is done in a lawful, appropriate and transparent fashion." BERR did not comment specifically on the trials of the software and rather concentrated on its future use. |
