04/12/2008 CEOs should be held responsible for data losses, poll says |
|
A new poll has revealed that people believe chief executive officers (CEOs) must be accountable for the data breaches.
Almost 43 per cent of respondents to a vnunet.com survey said that CEOs should be held directly responsible for the loss of sensitive data.
In the US, data breach rules require organisations to inform their customers of any security slip that may potentially put them at risk and this approach was favoured by 16 per cent of respondents.
Matthew Tyler, director of consultancy Evolution Security Systems, told the website that in today's internet age, there should be no need to take large amounts of private data out in the first place.
He states that most recent data breaches can be attributed to people not following current procedures.
"The best way forward is to design systems where this sensitive information cannot be taken out en masse as there is no reason to be doing this in this day and age," he adds.
