26/01/2009 Children database launches 'despite risks' |
|
A database that holds the details of every child in the UK has been launched today. According to reports, ContactPoint will give council workers access to the names, addresses and dates of birth of millions of children and will also contain data regarding their GP, school and parents. The £224 million database has been criticised by campaigners for civil liberties, the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats. David Laws, Liberal Democrat children's spokesman, said: "This intrusive and expensive project needs to be scrapped." He says that the rollout has been delayed because of technical issues, which "does not bode well for the future" and parents have the right to demand that personal details regarding their children do not fall into the wrong hands. "The government has shown it can't be trusted with sensitive data," he added. Names and details of up to 11 million children are reported to be stored on the database.
