E-crime unit to tackle fraud |

A specialist e-crime unit is to be established to help tackle the problem of electronic crime and internet fraud.
By co-ordinating a series of initiatives and providing specialist officer training, the Police Central e-crime Unit (PCeU) hopes to reduce online crime.
E-crime minister Vernon Coaker explained that the unit will "work closely with the National Fraud Reporting Centre to tackle electronic crime reported to it”.
Mr Coaker also said the unit would give police forces nationwide the "skills and techniques" they need to fight e-crime effectively.
The centre will cost £7 million to build and is due to open in 2009. City of London Police Commissioner Mike Bowron said he welcomed the government's decision to give financial backing to the e-crime unit.
Previously the police had the National Hi-Tech Crime Unit for tackling internet crime but it was disbanded in April 2006. |
