04/12/2008 Expert calls for European data loss legislation |
|
UK citizens are not being protected by current laws concerning the loss of data, it has been claimed.
Matt Brown, vice president at content production and control company Workshare, says it is "important" that the European Union responds to industry pressure to "widen the scope of legislation".
"Current laws do not go far enough to protect UK citizens, who put their trust in private and public sector organisations to keep their data secure," he told Information World Review.
In a recent survey, the company found that 71 per cent of UK law firms believe that data protection legislation needs to be reformed to help businesses manage sensitive data.
A total of 84 per cent of respondents noted an increase in mobile working.
The rise in mobile working could make matters worse, with more and more workers using laptops and smart phones that can easily be lost or stolen, it was claimed.
