04/11/2008 Gordon Brown suggests action over data loss |
|
Gordon Brown has issued a warning following the latest data loss blunder which saw a memory stick containing information from a government website left in a pub car park.
The prime minister said that action must be taken against contractors who lost sensitive government data.
Prime minister Brown described contractors Atos Origin, which manages the government website Gateway, as being guilty of "unacceptable behaviour".
He said that it was important to prevent similar data loss incidents happening in the future. He explained: "There will have to be changes in the way these contracts are issued to companies that make mistakes like this."
Atos Origin did admit that the one of their employees removing the memory stick from the company's premises was a "direct breach" of its operating procedures.
In a recent speech, Information Commissioner, Richard Thomas, said that the number of data breaches that had been brought to the watchdog's attention was "serious and worrying". |
