30/10/2008 Government data monitoring proposals 'insulting' |
|
An industry body has condemned government proposals to monitor phone calls and emails to combat terrorism.
Surveillance and privacy watchdog, Privacy International (PI), made the comments in light of a recent report by the Home Affairs Committee that called for data minimisation.
A spokesman for PI said that the governments response to the report to propose the introduction of a new surveillance system on an "unprecedented scale" was "insulting".
The spokesman for PI explained that data minimisation meant "governments should only collect what is absolutely necessary, and even then, the data should be kept to a minimum, and its processing limited as well." According to an official press release relating to the governments plans to monitor personal information, intercepting and obtaining communications data is "vital to fighting terrorism and combating serious crime".
Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said that the changes the government plans to make "may require legislation" and that the safeguards they plan to put in place "certainly will".
Under the Human Rights Act, and article eight of the European Convention, the entitlement to privacy includes the right to respect for your privacy. |
