28/11/2008 Government to 'consult public over use of Electoral Roll' |
|
The Ministry of Justice has announced that it will hold a public consultation about availability of the Electoral Roll for use by direct marketing companies.
However, the move has caused controversy among direct marketers, who believe the public do not have a full understanding of the list's employment by businesses, according to brandrepublic.com.
Jon Cano-Lopez, managing director of Ai Data Intelligence, is quoted by the website as saying: "If they ask the public, then it will only go one way [
] there are limits to the understanding about how it is used.
"Overlaid with other sources, then [
] it is a useful verification tool [
] rather than a blanket ban, there should be stringent controls as to how it is used."
The Ministry of Justice has said that the public consultation will help it gain a greater understanding of the potential impact on the economy as a whole if access to the Roll is limited.
It was announced recently that the Information Commissioner has been granted permission by the Ministry of Justice to issue fines for the loss of data.
