14/01/2009 Government to provide 'more low-cost housing' |
|
The government has inked a £18 million deal to supply further affordable housing. Pursuant to the deal, 379 affordable homes across the UK will be provided for families who would otherwise be on waiting lists. The deal was brokered between the Homes and Communities Agency, Bovis Homes and a number of Housing Associations and is the largest deal that the Clearing House Programme has agreed with a major housebuilder. Housebuilders are able to sell their unsold stock to Housing Associations for use as affordable housing through the scheme. This purchase means that the National Clearing House has brought a total of 4,800 homes into use as affordable housing for a combined £160 million, with more deals in the pipeline. Housing minister Margaret Beckett says that the agreement will help the building industry, while also "providing more affordable homes for families on waiting lists".
