24/10/2008 Govt database will target pay-as-you-go users |
|
People who rely on pay-as-you-go mobile phones will be the targets of the government's newly proposed surveillance database.
According to equality organisation Liberty, those who use top-up phones are generally either young or don't have very much money.
Liberty has argued that if the database becomes implemented then the government will essentially be assuming that everyone in the country is a suspect.
Director Shami Charkrabarti commented: "Pay-as-you-go is favoured by younger and poorer people. How dare they assume that all these citizens are suspects."
Anyone who purchases a mobile phone could potentially be asked to show their passport as part of the government's plan to develop a huge large-scale database.
Mr Charkrabarti went on to say that the use of such a surveillance method can be mistake-prone.
"When will they ever learn that the bigger the database, the greater the risk of accident, error and abuse," he commented. |
