14/08/2008 Identity theft from chip-and-pin terminals |
|
Police have warned the public they could be in danger of identity theft from chip-and-pin machines after a police raid revealed equipment to steal individual's details and make fake cards.
Following the raid on a counterfeit card factory in Birmingham on Tuesday (August 12th), two people were arrested and charged with conspiracy to defraud.
Whilst chip-and-pin technology was hailed as a success when it was first launched, the police have warned that the terminals have been hacked into in 30 shops in the UK.
Jane Milne of the British Retail Consortium said: "Customers should be assured that UK retailers always take the protection of cardholder data seriously and are continuing to invest millions of pounds to enhance existing security measures."
The Banking Code should mean that anyone who is a victim of fraud is refunded and banks will usually replace money stolen from someone's account.
However, the BBC noted that "there is a question of liability if customers have given away their pin number". |
