08/09/2008 Latest data loss case revealed |
|
The latest data loss which led to as many as 5,000 UK prison staff details being lost, has prompted the justice secretary, Jack Straw, to order an inquiry into how the incident occurred and why ministers were not informed sooner. Michael Wills, who is the minister in charge of data protection, has given assurances that there were "no significant risks to security". Electronic Data Systems Corp lost the disk a year before ministers were informed. The disc that went missing had been used by contractors EDS. The data was then removed from offices in Gloucestershire in July 2007 and was sent for tests at a facility in Tyne and Wear before being moved to another EDS base in Shropshire, the Daily Mail reported. David Davis, the former shadow home secretary, told the Times the incident showed that neither ministers nor private contractors could be relied upon. He said: "Yet again it demonstrates the astonishing lack of discipline, not just on the part of the government but on the part of the people who will be responsible for the integrity of the new ID card system." Last month home office contractor PA Consulting lost a memory stick which contained the names, addresses and release dates of 127,000 criminals. |
