19/08/2008 'Major data losses' described by MoJ as 'regrettable' |
|
The personal data of some 45,000 people has been lost over the past year, the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) has disclosed.
Security breaches occurred in nine separate incidences and the majority of those involved have not been notified.
A risk assessment was carried out by the MoJ and it was deemed unnecessary to tell those whose records had gone missing.
In a statement the Ministry said: "major breaches" had occurred, and that "whilst data loss is regrettable, all MoJ incidents have been reported and necessary action taken".
The Times reported that the information had been stored on devices such as laptops some of which were described as 'inadequately protected'.
In June last year the names, addresses and bank account details of 27,000 employees of ministry suppliers were leaked due to "inadequately protected storage devices".
Last month the Times revealed that an investigation into missing HM Revenue and Customs child benefit records cost nearly half a million pounds. |
