29/09/2008 Owners of commercial property prepare for EPCs |

As businesses get ready for the final phase of the introduction of energy performance certificates (EPC) for commercial buildings, energy assesors are seeing a big increase in work. From October 1st, any commercial building put on the market must be certified 'as soon as is practicable' and any properties that are currently for sale must have an EPC by January 4th. Wade Barker, managing director of environmental consultant Envos, which employs 25 assessors, explained how the change in the law is affecting his business. He said: "Our assessors are already pretty busy and we expect them to be much busier after 1 October." Mr Barker explained that they had been quoting for properties that the company was quoting for properties that were not even on the market yet. Commenting on the change, Mr Barker said: "Property is an illiquid asset anyway, but its even more illiquid without a certificate." All public sector buildings of over 1,000 square metres that provide a service to the public will have to display energy certificates as of October 1st. |
