A large percentage of public sector IT decision-makers are unaware of the possibility of data breach notification legislation being introduced, publictechnology.net reported. Research from Clearswift revealed that 62 per cent of those responsible for IT in the public sector were unaware of possible changes to the law. The website also reported not enough time and resource is being dedicated to Information Assurance (IA) in the sector which is putting organisations "perilously at risk of suffering from data breaches". Almost 20 per cent of those working in the public sector admitted to having experienced at least one data loss incidence in the last 12-18 months. Over half (53 per cent) of respondents said they felt not enough time was spent on IA issues. Richard Turner, chief executive at Clearswift said: "Information Assurance is not a software patch or a firewall. Its a way life. "It needs to be embedded into an organisation's ethos and a mission-critical issue urgently needs support and attention from board level executives." When questioned 65 per cent of public sector workers said they were concerned about a possible new IA failure in their organisation occurring within the next 12 months. |
