Biometric identity cards 'not being scanned' |

Britain's first swathes of identity cards issued to foreigners are reportedly not being read.
It has been claimed that the government neglected to issue a single scanner to employers and recruiters ahead of the launch - which hopes to help abolish illegal employment.
Last week, a Home Office spokesperson admitted that police forces, hospitals and education institutes are yet to receive the scanning machines so authorities and employers will have to rely on visual checks on the card, according to the Observer.
Employers are being urged to familiarise themselves with the cards and contact the UK Border Agency hotline if they feel they have encountered a fake card.
Contractor UK claims that employers in both the public and private sectors should modify how they vet workers' rights to be in the UK, ensuring their "contact details and a copy of their identity card are stored".
