The loss of 3,000 customers' bank details by Virgin Media was a breach of the Data Protection Act, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has ruled.
Personal information including customers' bank details was burnt onto an encrypted CD and the data was then lost.
As a result of the incident, ICO has ordered Virgin Media to sign an agreement that means they must comply with the data protection act.
Mick Gorrill, ICO assistant editor, explained the importance of protecting data: "The ICO takes all breaches of data security seriously. Customers must feel confident that their personal information will be handled properly by an organisation and, importantly, that their details will not be accessed by a third party."
In addition to signing the agreement, Virgin Media has been forced to implement various safety measures to prevent security breaches and future data loss.
For instance, any portable or mobile devices used to store or transmit personal information must now be encrypted. |
