Baroness in new divorce law call
Baroness Deech has argued that British divorce law should be remodelled along European lines.

The baroness - who is chair of the Bar Standards Board - is to argue in a speech today that the UK should adopt the method by which engaged couples are obliged to see lawyers to draw up prenuptial agreements.

She will say that London is the divorce capital of Europe because such devices are not legally binding in Britain.

"It is hard to see why adults should not be free to contract at the point of marriage for the financial consequences of any divorce," the baroness is to state.

Those who do wish to make a prenuptial agreement may want to speak to a family lawyer about it.

Last week, midlands-based family lawyer Elizabeth Howe argued that divorce laws need to be updated to reflect the realities of 21st century life.

Writing in the Birmingham Post, she said the assumption that a wife should take half her husband's income was inconsistent with the "greater equality" that exists now.
