03/03/2009 Benefits system blamed for marriage break-ups |
|
The benefits system put in place by the current government has led to an increase in divorce, new research has claimed.
A Royal Economic Society study carried out by academics at the University of Essex found that women who split from their husbands became financially better off due to the benefits they were able to claim as single mothers.
This has led to a 160 per cent rise in marriage break-up rates in low-income households since the Working Families Tax Credit was introduced in 1999, with women who had children two per cent more likely to divorce than those who did not.
The study examined the circumstances of 3,235 couples since 1991 tracked by the British Household Panel Survey.
In each of the past five years the age group with the highest divorce rate in Britain has been the late twenties for both men and women, according to the Office for National Statistics.
