A family lawyer has argued that the divorce law needs to be updated to reflect the reality of contemporary family life and working patterns.
Writing for the Birmingham Post, midlands-based Elizabeth Howe argued: "The law needs to be reviewed in order that it reflects life in the 21st Century, which represents greater equality for women."
She noted that the law has changed little since the 1960s and 1970s, when women had fewer working opportunities.
Referring to recent arguments by law professor Baroness Deech, Ms Howe argued that not enough weight is being placed on the "need" for women to achieve workplace equality.
The divorce lawyer concluded that high-flyers may find it hard to enter marriage without having a prenuptial agreement in place in future.
It was recently reported that a woman was seeking a divorce settlement of half her husband's wealth after a marriage that lasted just a few weeks.
Model Heather Swan has made the claim after splitting from footballer Michael Chopra, the Daily Mirror claimed.
