19/02/2009 Civil Partnerships Act anniversary 'passes without ceremony' |
|
It has been reported that the third anniversary of the Civil Partnerships Act has been and gone quietly, indicating the success of the legislation. Since December 21st 2005, when the first civil partnerships were registered in the UK, there have been 26,787 of them, the Times has revealed. However, it also claims that one of the most interesting statistics is how many have been dissolved - with the number of dissolutions in 2007 standing at just 42. "By giving those who register a civil partnership all the privileges of marriage, society appears to have achieved not only a stable social unit but one that is perhaps more stable than marriage itself," the publication claims. The minimum legal age for registering a civil partnership in England and Wales is 16, although written consent may be required for anyone under 18.
