Court case taken to Supreme Court
One of the first divorce cases to be taken to the new UK supreme court will see a claim lodged that would seek to overturn a ruling made overseas.

Sikirat Agbaje gained only £7,000 from a court ruling in Nigeria in 2005 that left her husband with £616,000 - including two London homes, the Times reports.

Nigerian-born Ms Agbaje, who is a British citizen and lives in north London, claimed the case should have been heard in Britain, where she would have expected a much larger payout, but a High Court decision in her favour was overturned when Mr Agbaje appealed.

Those who may have had an unfavourable ruling made against them overseas could wish to speak to a divorce lawyer in the UK to see if they can appeal.

One development from abroad that may prevent unequal rulings is that of prenuptial agreements, which are not binding in the UK but are in some other countries.

Programme director of the Legal Practice Course at the BPP Law School Alison Wells said recently that despite this, they are increasingly worth having as judges often take them into account.
