26/08/2009 Divorce costs 'led to criminal activity' |
|
An accountancy firm director turned to fraudulent activity to fund a costly divorce settlement, a court has been told. KPMG employee Andy Weatherall made a series of small expenses claims to help deal with the financial costs of divorcing his first wife. The court heard that this action enabled him to be able to do this while also funding his new wife's extravagant lifestyle. Mr Weatherall's action, which saw him ultimately make false claims amounting to £545,000, may face a jail term after admitting the charges. Those facing an expensive divorce action may wish to speak to a divorce solicitor to seek a favourable deal to keep costs down. Earlier this week, a survey of solicitors found that 72 per cent believe financial issues in the recession are affecting the number of marital break-ups. The Unbiased.co.uk survey found that 48 per cent believe many clients will wait for a better economic climate before proceeding with settlements. Written by Laurence Smith
