A three-month delay should precede the issuing of any divorce petition, a new report has urged.
The publication, entitled Every Family Matters, said there should be such a 'cooling off period' with counselling provided before proceedings commence in a similar way to the arrangements in place in Australia.
Produced by the Centre for Social Justice, a thinktank run by former Conservative leader Iain Duncan Smith, it said the Australian method "is accepted by most as a genuine aid to family stability".
Domestic violence cases would be an exception to this rule under the plans.
Those facing the end of their marriage under the current legal system may wish to engage the services of a divorce lawyer.
Among other aspects of the thinktank's position on divorce is opposition to European Union proposals that non-British couples living in Britain should not be going through divorce proceedings according to UK laws.
It stated that this would "tear up 200 years of legal precedent".
