Divorce lawyers may be receiving an increased number of calls from same-sex couples as civil partnership break-ups have more than quadrupled.
The Independent cited figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) that showed there were 180 dissolutions - the equivalent of a divorce - in 2008, up from 42 in 2007.
While this statistic rose, however, the number of couples entering into civil partnerships fell from 8,728 to 7,169.
An ONS spokesperson claimed that the figures demonstrate "true equality" between different sexualities.
"They highlight the fact [that] there is no difference between the success rates between hetero and homosexual couples, like some sections of the media try and claim," the representative said.
The organisation also suggested that its latest findings were not completely unexpected and that some of the decline in partnerships had been anticipated.
Civil partnerships have been allowed since December 2005 when the Civil Partnership Act 2004 came into force. As with marriage, couples are legally required to give notice in advance of registering their partnership.
