A man left with £450,000 of a £3 million fortune after the court settlement went in favour of his wife has launched a legal challenge against the award. Banker Paul Murphy has alleged "unfair discrimination" occurred in the High Court case and has taken the issue up with the Court of Appeal. Mr Murphy argued that while he had been earning well at times during the couple's marriage - which produced no children - he was not earning any money at the time of the settlement. At the same time, Mrs Murphy had a good salary as the director of an art gallery, it was noted. Those wishing to appeal the outcome of their divorce settlements may benefit from speaking to a divorce lawyer. Earlier this week peer Lady Deech argued that divorce law is unfairly skewed towards ex-wives in settlements, based on outdated assumptions about husbands being the main breadwinners. Debating with her on the BBC Radio 4 Today Programme, divorce lawyer Vanessa Lloyd Platt disagreed, arguing that many women give up careers and consequently income to look after children.
