Many couples who have split up cannot live separately due to the current property market situation, it has been noted.
Housing charity Shelter revealed in a new survey that a quarter of the adult population - nearly ten million - said they knew someone who had been unable to move after a relationship breakdown due to the lack of affordable homes.
Director of policy and campaigns at the charity Kay Boycott said: "Unfortunately relationships do break down which is painful enough, but being forced to carry on living with an ex-partner, even for a short time, must add real pressure to the situation."
Those who might find themselves still living in the same home as an ex-spouse after a breakup may wish to speak to a divorce lawyer about the legal arrangements that may be put in place to manage the situation and eventually move on from it.
A spokesperson for Relate recently stated that the number of requests for help with relationships increased by two-thirds last year, suggesting the problem may be getting more common.
