23/12/2009 January tipped to see divorce surge |
|
January is likely to see a surge in calls to marriage and relationship counselling service Relate, a spokesperson for the organisation has said.
Commenting on the seasonal situation, she noted that January this year saw a 49 per cent rise in the number of calls compared to December, adding that the recession can add strain to a relationship and make matters harder.
"People can see over the Christmas period where the cracks in their relationships are. There is a lot of time spent together, so you can't avoid the problems you might have been trying to hide," the spokesperson added.
Those whose marriages do not survive the Christmas and new year period may wish to see a divorce lawyer at an early stage to try to ensure any divorce that does occur is dealt with in as amicable a manner as possible.
Earlier this week, it was claimed that social networking site Facebook plays a part in causing divorces.
According to internet service Divorce-Online, one in five filings cited the website as a factor in the break-up, implying that the site has been facilitating inappropriate cheating.
