Many people who might divorce are put off from doing so by their lack of knowledge of legal proceedings, it has been claimed.
An online survey by a legal firm in Birmingham found that 60 per cent of the 3,000 respondents were scared of the process, with to a third of married couples putting off leaving their partner, the Birmingham Post reports.
The survey also found that as many as one in five people in the city need legal advice, but worries about the complexity of procedures and issues of cost are deterring some people.
Such a situation may also exist in London and those thinking of instigating divorce proceedings may wish to speak to a divorce lawyer to find out more about what is involved.
Last month, data from the Office for National Statistics showed that the average marriage lasts 11.7 years.
The Daily Mirror noted that this represented a jump from eight years in 1985.
