19/10/2009 Marriages 'lasting longer' |
|
The average UK marriage is now lasting longer than it used to, government figures have revealed.
Data from the Office for National Statistics showed that the typical couple stays together for 11.7 years.
This compares with eight years in 1985, according to the Daily Mail.
However, some have questioned whether marriages are likely to last, with twice-divorced author of the 'Marriage Delusion' Michael Buchanan claiming that longer life expectancy now means it is "unlikely" people will stay together for life.
Those looking at getting married may decide to take out a prenuptial agreement to protect their assets in the event of a marriage break-up, something family lawyers will be able to help with.
Last week, a poll of solicitors by consumer website unbiased.co.uk found that two-thirds expect there to be an increase in the use of such documents, with 82 per cent saying they can help protect financial assets in at least some circumstances.
