British Telecom has announced it is planning to shed another 15,000 posts from its workforce.
The company, which has already cut 15,000 from its workforce in the past year, revealed it would have to do this again as it unveiled annual losses of £134 million.
Although this is 10,000 more than the firm had predicted, it said it hoped voluntary redundancies, retirements, natural wastage and non-replacement would combine to make compulsory redundancies unnecessary.
However, some people losing their jobs to redundancy may find the matter is compulsory and those who believe their employer may not have followed the rules correctly might wish to see a solicitor to see if they have grounds for a claim.
Official figures showed the number of unemployed people in the UK in March to be 2.22 million, a rise of 244,000 over the previous three months and 592,000 over the past 12 months.
This total amounts to 7.1 per cent of the workforce.
