09/06/2009 Prenuptial legal agreements 'still on the rise' |
|
The number of prenuptial agreements in the UK is still rising and is likely to go on doing so, particularly as the recession lasts, it has been stated.
A report by chartered accountants Grant Thornton has found that 59 per cent of lawyers deal with more prenuptial arrangements than other kinds of agreements, compared with 36 per cent who mainly advise on cohabitation and just two per cent whose main work is on civil partnerships.
Commenting on the prenuptial numbers, forensic partner at the company Robert Kerr said: "As more and more couples are bringing more individual wealth into a relationship they are seeking to protect their assets, ensuring that upon separation each leaves the partnership with the assets that they entered with."
Those wishing to sign a prenuptial, cohabiting or civil partnership contract may wish to see a solicitor to get one drawn up.
Postnuptial agreements can also influence the outcomes of divorce settlements, as one case last week showed.
A high court judge ruled that a man seeking a large slice of his ex-wife's fortune should receive nothing, partly because of his conviction for abusing her grandchildren - for which he is serving a prison sentence - but also because he signed a contract of this nature.
