A woman from west London has gained £220,000 in a divorce settlement that occurred 22 years after she separated from her husband.
She was awarded the money from the proceeds of investments her estranged husband made while the couple were apart, which she made a claim on after bringing up their son single-handedly, the Times reports.
Although the pair split in 1986, it was only last year the divorce came through, with the solicitor for the woman stating: "She is extremely happy and felt that the court has taken account of her contribution in supporting their son."
She had not pushed through a divorce sooner because of the potential damage it would have had on the youngster, who is now an adult.
Those facing divorce whose circumstances may be unusual can consult a solicitor over the issues to see how their settlement might be arrived at.
People who are divorcing should not see online communities created to provide mutual support as a "panacaea", chairman of family law solicitors organisation Resolution Nick Longford told the Times recently.
He warned against assertions on such sites that people should self-represent themselves in legal cases.
