16/10/2008 Businesses warned internet is 'legal minefield' |

Owners of small businesses are often not aware of what they must do to comply with the law in relation to their websites.
That is the warning issued by Phil McCabe, spokesman for the Forum of Private Business (FPB), who has described the internet as a "legal minefield".
Mr McCabe made his comments in light of changes to the regulations of the Companies Act 2006, which stipulate that a company's name, number, place of registration and registered office address must be displayed on their website and in every email they send.
He explained that there are other issues which companies need to be vigilant about. He warned companies to be aware of "specific regulations force firms trading online to display certain details, there are accessibility rules to ensure that websites are available to everybody, and also requirements covering copyright, data protection and privacy".
The act also states that those who collect and store data on visitors to their website must notify the Information Commissioner's Office unless they are otherwise exempt. |
