22/09/2008 Govt should 'clampdown on cowboy traders' |
|
So-called "cowboy traders" who falsely portray themselves as organisations which deal with the disposal of electronic waste need to be stopped, a charity has said.
According to Computer Aid International, the Environment Agency (EA) needs to be given better resources in order to enforce the legislation governing e-waste.
The organisation has made its call to the government following recent news that e-waste has been dumped in parts of China and West Africa.
Louise Richards, chief executive of the charity, commented: "It's imperative that the government clamps down on cowboy traders posing as legitimate re-use and recycling organisations, who are enticing unwitting UK businesses to use them for WEEE disposal."
Ms Richards suggested that the EA should be able to remove licences from firms which breach the e-waste legislation.
In additions, she advised that the agency should also be able to prosecute those organisations which illegally dump e-waste.
Under the Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) directive, introduced in 2002, IT manufacturers have are meant to ensure that their products are the safely disposed.
