21/07/2008 Allegations that BAA skewed results to get Heathrow third runway go-ahead |

BAA and the government are facing allegations that they manipulated noise and emissions data to strengthen the case for a third runway at Heathrow.
According to a BBC Panorama show to be broadcast tonight (July 21st) BAA invented the existence of a "green" jet.
It is claimed that BAA "made up" the existence of the jet when it realised that it would likely exceed the legal limits for noise and pollution with regular planes, businessgreen.com reported.
Possibly in response to the allegations, BAA has pledged that it will reduce the number of flights that take off and land at "an expanded Heathrow if airlines do not adopt cleaner and quieter fleets as quickly as expected".
Although the government has hinted at its support for the third runway, the final decision has been delayed following protests from local residents concerned about noise pollution.
Environmental groups are also now launching a legal challenge after the allegations that BAA skewed data to get the go-ahead on the third runway.
A group of local residents, trade unionists, MPs and green protesters are due to meet at a conference in Harlington on July 26th to discuss their next step if the Government backs the third runway plans. |
