A state school in Ealing that had been accused of having an admissions policy that discriminated against children from nearby council estates has won its legal challenge.
The Schools Adjudicator had ordered that Drayton Manor High School should change its admissions code so that it did not discriminate against children from poor backgrounds.
A High Court judge ruled that the adjudicator had given insufficient reasons for its decision and the objection was subsequently quashed.
Commenting on the case, Sir Pritpal Singh, headmaster at the school, said to the Times: "I am very angry that we have had to go to the High Court for a decision. The amount of money and time that has been wasted is an absolute disgrace."
Sir Singh said that he was now concerned about families applying to secondary schools in the area as they had been forced to wait.
Ealing council delayed its deadline for applications to secondary schools while the case was being heard.
Schools Adjudicators were appointed under Section 25 of the School Standards and Framework Act 1998 and part of their remit was to determine objections to admission arrangements. |
