23/07/2008 Ealing to run car-tow program |
|
Ealing is to be one of four authorities in London to embark on a six-month trial which will see those motorists who fail to pay three parking tickets have their cars towed away.
Traffic wardens, employed by the council, will monitor the streets and cars which they can verify that have three or more unpaid parking tickets could be clamped or towed, the Telegraph reported.
Discussing the proposed system, Edmund King, president of the AA, said: "We have regularly called for changes to parking enforcement which are aimed at targeting the persistent offender rather than person who makes the odd mistake."
However, some groups fear that the system will catch innocent motorists that have made valid appeals against tickets.
Barrie Segal of AppealNow, a group that helps those that want to appeal against illegal parking tickets, explained the potential pitfalls.
He said: "There is a danger that cars will be towed away to the obscurity of a car pound, when appeals are pending." |
