The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has launched a consultation to study how age discrimination affects employers' flexible retirement policies.
According to CityWire, the DWP has proposed that occupational pension schemes be permitted to reduce or cease benefits for people who are over the age of 65 - or stop death-in-service benefits for those older than 65.
The DWP hopes that this will make it cheaper for organisations to employ workers over the age of 65 and promote work for the elderly.
Andrew Tully, senior pensions policy manager at Standard Life, has criticised the plans.
He claims that it would they could easily be overruled by the European Court of Justice.
"The UK government is suggesting that employers can stop providing pension and death benefits at age 65. But UK legislation is taken directly from a European directive," he said.
The consultation period commenced on December 15th and will run until February 6th 2009.
