The number of age-related employment cases has risen by over a quarter in the recession, new figures have indicated.
Data contained in the annual report of the Advisory Conciliation and Arbitration Service (Acas) revealed that it had to deal with 1,744 cases of age discrimination in 2008-09, compared with 1,547 the previous year.
Other issues that saw increases in cases included discrimination on the grounds of race, sex and Disability.
The most common individual labour disputes were over unfair dismissal, with 43,028 cases, up from 33,352, while redundancy pay cases rose from 2,891 to 3,938.

Such cases may continue to rise due to increasing unemployment as the recession continues.
Official government figures out last week indicated that the UK economy shrank by 0.8 per cent in the second quarter of this year.
