A campaign which is aiming to highlight the important of asbestos awareness among tradesmen has been set up by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Supported by the secretary of state for Scotland, Jim Murphy, Asbestos: The Hidden Killer was launched last Thursday (October 23rd).
The campaign will run for two months from October to November and has been designed to show how important it is to be educated about asbestos and the diseases connected to it.
It was launched in conjunction with the release of figures from the HSE which indicated that 20 tradesmen die every week die from asbestos-related illnesses.
Greg Haywood, head of the HSE's Asbestos Licensing Unit, stressed how important it is for people to be educated about the dangers of working with asbestos.
He said: "The overall number of deaths is rising because a large number of workers who have already been exposed to asbestos dust around 40 years ago will go on to develop mesothelioma, a terminal cancer or other asbestos related diseases."
According to the HSE, many of the highest death rates from mesothelioma in Britain occur in the Scottish areas of West Dunbartonshire, Inverclyde, Renfrewshire and Glasgow. |
