New statistics have revealed that the average full-time annual salary earned in Great Britain now stands at £31,500.
Halifax has revealed that this figure is up by 21 per cent from £25,939 in 2003 to £31,500 in 2008, a rise which has outstripped retail price growth.
The data suggests that retail prices have risen by 18 per cent over the same five-year period.
Martin Ellis, chief economist at Halifax, says: "Average earnings in Great Britain have risen by more than retail prices over the past five years, indicating an increase in living standards for the typical worker."
Last month, Jessica Woodroffe, head of campaigns for the Fawcett Society, claimed that employers are paying women less than men for jobs that require "similar skills".
She added that it can take a "great deal of courage" for a woman to take a case to court if she feels she has been discriminated against over pay.
