BA call on pay may have legal implications
British Airways (BA) has issued a request to its employees to work without pay for a month to help it stave off a financial disaster.

Chief executive of the airline Willie Walsh - who has said he will forego his salary in July - commented that the call has come as part of a "fight for survival" by the company, which recently recorded a pre-tax loss of £401 million.

The move has angered unions, who have added that while Mr Walsh may be able to work for nothing, most staff would not be able to afford such a move.

BA's request may be copied by other employers, something that could have implications for employees, both financially and in terms of preference when future decision about redundancy may be made.

Those living in the capital facing issues of this kind may wish to consult employment lawyers in London.

Airlines other than BA may be affected due to the fall in passenger numbers in the recession.

The total of people flying to or from UK airports in the first three months of 2009 was 13 per cent down on the same period last year, figures from the Civil Aviation Authority have shown.
