BRC calls for government 'not to put cost burdens on retailers'
The British Retail Consortium (BRC) has put together a six point strategy to "prevent new costs being put on consumers through taxes and regulation".

Richard Dodd, a spokesman for the BRC, said the plans the chancellor put forward for housing were not what they "wanted".

Mr Dodd said: "We need help for the housing market; we set out plans for that but not quite what Alastair Darling announced yesterday."

He explained that their six point strategy included "things like not putting new cost burdens on retailers because if new regulation and taxes are imposed that builds through to prices".

Any increase in prices, he said, is not good for the industry as it will "undermine" consumer confidence and "ability to spend".

Governments, he said, should be aware that any new regulation or taxes filter down to customers as they affect the price of products.

According to the Nationwide Consumer Confidence Index, drawn up in conjunction with TNS, consumers' perception of the current economic climate is bleak.

When questioned, almost two-thirds believed that the situation had worsened in August.ADNFCR-1805-ID-18764370-ADNFCR
